Excess electron pairs from heavy-ion collisions at CERN and a more complete picture of thermal production.

چکیده

The low-mass dielectron signal from heavy-ion collisions at the CERN–SPS reported by the CERES collaboration is in excess of estimated hadronic decays suggestive of possible contribution from two-pion annihilation or other hadronic reactions. In the absence of dramatic medium modifications, annihilation alone is unable to account for the data. We explore the role of pion plus resonance scattering [πρ → a1(1260) → πee] which has favorable kinematics to populate masses between 2mπ and mρ. While it seems to account for some of the remaining excess beyond annihilation, it fails to allow quantitative interpretation of data. Typeset using REVTEX

Strange Messages: Chemical and Thermal Freeze-out in Nuclear Collisions

Thermal models are commonly used to interpret heavy-ion data on particle yields and spectra and to extract the conditions of chemical and thermal freezeout in heavy-ion collisions. I discuss the usefulness and limitations of such thermal model analyses and review the experimental and theoretical evidence for thermalization in nuclear collisions. The crucial role of correlating strangeness produ...

ηc production and dimuon enhancement in heavy ion collisions

Dilepton production in heavy ion collisions, in the Intermediate Mass Region (IMR) has consistently shown an excess over theoretical estimates. An attempt to understand this discrepancy between the observed dilepton pairs and the theoretical estimate is made here through the production of the ηc meson and estimates obtained by NRQCD calculations. We find that ηc production offers a satisfactory...

Recent results from the CERN NA60 experiment

NA60 is a CERN SPS experiment that studied dimuon production in In-In collisions at 158 A·GeV per nucleon. More recently proton nucleus collisions have also been investigated in order to provide a reference for heavy ion studies. Some of the most important results obtained by the experiment are the first measurement of the ρ spectral function in nuclear collision and the study of its medium-ind...

Na60 Results on Thermal Dimuons Na60 Collaboration

The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has measured muon pairs with unprecedented precision in 158A GeV In-In collisions. A strong excess of pairs above the known sources is observed in the whole mass region 0.2<M<2.6 GeV. The mass spectrum for M<1 GeV is consistent with a dominant contribution from ππ → ρ → μμ annihilation. The associated ρ spectral function shows a strong broadening, but essenti...

Intermediate-mass Dileptons at the Cern-sps and Rhic

The significance of thermal dilepton radiation at intermediate invariant masses (1 GeV < M < 3 GeV) in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is investigated. At CERN-SpS energies, a consistent explanation of the excess observed by NA50 can be given. At RHIC energies the thermal signal is dominated by early emission indicative for QGP formation. Chemical under-saturation effects and the competi...
